Midfoot Pain Can Be Caused by Arthritis

It’s hard to imagine, but the foot contains 26 bones that work together with ligaments, cartilage, and tendons to help you stand, walk, and run. Sometimes the area of the foot just in front of the ankle, known as the midfoot, becomes swollen and painful. It also may develop spurs that become painful. When the cartilage between the midfoot bones begins to wear out, the midfoot bones start to rub against each other, causing inflammatory pain, or arthritis. Luckily, several non-surgical remedies can help to relieve the pain. Start with finding shoes with a stiffer sole that can reduce the force on the midfoot area when you walk. In contrast, a softer mesh upper in the shoe will further disperse the pressure on the area. It’s best to avoid tightening your laces too much, thereby reducing the downward force. It also may help to give up running and jogging and replace them with water aerobics, swimming, or stationary bike riding for exercise. Obesity just makes midfoot arthritis even more painful, so adopting a healthier diet can help too. Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, available over the counter, can work to reduce the inflammation and pain. However, if your midfoot pain increases despite these measures, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a podiatrist who can examine your feet and offer enhanced treatment options, including corticosteroid injections or in some cases, surgery.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Palm Beach Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Ways to Keep Blisters From Forming

When fluid filled lesions form on the feet because of pressure and/or friction, they form blisters. Blisters can be very painful and can form from a variety of factors. Common factors that can cause blisters to form include wearing shoes that are too stiff or don’t fit right, too much moisture in the feet, foot deformities, and wrinkled socks. There are some things that can be done to help prevent blisters that include keeping the feet dry, wearing socks and shoes that fit correctly, and making sure to check the feet for any rubbing or tenderness that is caused by shoes. Patients who do form blisters on the feet should make sure to not pop them because they usually clear up after around 3-7 days. However, patients who have persistent blisters, are diabetic or believe that their blisters are infected would be wise to consult with a podiatrist.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of Palm Beach Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Flexible Flat Feet in Children

It is not unusual for a child to have a condition known as flexible flat feet. Symptoms include a flattened arch, which results in the feet splaying outward. This may cause some pain in the arch if the child is particularly active. Avoiding weight-bearing activities, such as running, and turning instead to cycling or swimming, can give the heels a rest. Stretching the outer calf muscles on a daily basis can also help. Wearing shoes with cushioning and support as well as a slight heel can help to decrease pounding on the heel and the flattening of the arch. Custom orthotics can also be used to help eliminate discomfort. A podiatrist can perform tests to determine the severity of the case and suggest several remedies to reduce the symptoms. It is a good idea to plan regular visits to allow the doctor to monitor your child’s foot condition on a regular basis.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Palm Beach Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, and West Palm Beach, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

What to Do if You Break a Toe

A broken toe usually involves something heavy dropping on it or stubbing it on a piece of furniture or another hard surface. The result is bruising and swelling that makes it difficult or impossible to wear shoes due to the pain. Frequently, the patient walks with a limp if they can walk at all. It can take up to 6 weeks for a broken toe to fully heal. Here are a few measures you can implement at home to help with the healing process. First, stay off the foot, and then wrap it to keep the swelling down. Keep ice on the affected toe and elevate it as often as possible. You also may need to take over-the-counter pain medication. Whether your toe is broken or sprained, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist who can determine the severity of the injury. The foot specialist will take an X-ray and depending on the results, wrap the injured toe to toe next to it (known as buddy taping) as a splint for stabilization. A hard boot may be prescribed to keep the toe safe from further injury. Walking aids, such as crutches, may also be recommended to help keep weight off the toe. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Palm Beach Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.
